The 1942 battle of Guadalcanal was one of the seminal events of WWII in the Pacific. This image, showing the United States troops eager for battle, was taken on the island BEFORE they had come into contact with the Japanese and engaged in the fight! Somewhere in this rabble is perhaps John Basilone who would be one of any number of troops on this day, but an American hero just hours later. This is the only photograph we have ever handled from Guadalcanal taken before the actual fight and it is a tremendous rarity.
