When it was announced in 1925 that the great babe Ruth was ill and would not start the baseball season in New York, it was HUGE news. So much so that schoolboys scaled fences in New York at St. Vincent's hospital and sat on brick walls, clamoring up to the windows of his hospital room for a word from their idol. Here, five young boys complete with bat and gloves have a conversation with a woman leaning out a window at the hospital where Ruth was recovering, It is incredible to think he was such an idol that these boys just sat and waited at the hospital, sort of like a schoolyard candle light vigil for their stricken hero. Issued by Wide World Photos and stamped on the back with a full paper caption as well, this is a poignant piece of baseball history.
