Two days after Carl Mays of the New York Yankees struck Ray Chapman of the Indians with a pitched ball resulting in the death of Chapman, the Yankees unveiled a black arm band to pay tribute to their fallen enemy. Here Ping Bodie of the Yankees models his uniform with the band for photographers on the field. This image is possibly the first taken of the black arm band and it presents beautifully with a crease across the center that does not detract from the image itself as much as the technical grade would suggest. An important piece of baseball history relating to one of it's darkest moments on the diamond!
