As the New York Yankees wrapped up their 1939 season they called for a fallen hero to be their inspirational leader going forward. Lou Gehrig, despite being ravaged by ALS and nearing death, appeared back in uniform and was seated at center for this official photograph of the American League Champions as they headed into the World Series. An incredible piece of baseball history as this was one of the last images ever taken of Gehrig in uniform as he would be too weak to appear at the stadium or anywhere in public during the 1940 season. Issued by the International News and stamped on the back with a full paper caption, this is one of the more significant images of Gehrig we have ever offered.
