Sweeping 1909 action photograph of a game between the Red Sox and Yankees (Highlanders) at Hilltop Park in New York. Taken by photographer Charles Conlon, he was taking his life into his own hands as he was crouched just a few feet from the batters box as the pitch was about to be delivered to catcher Walter Blair. The batter is Amby McConnell of the Red Sox and the umpire was Tim Hurst, one of the pioneers of the position. The style of play of the deadball era is clearly evident in this image as Blair is in a standing position while McConnell is batting with s lightly split grip, similar to what Ty Cobb would have done. The crowd at Hilltop Park is full of excitement as even in 1911, Yankees v. Red Sox was a special event. In all our years of handling vintage baseball photography and in looking at over two million sports photographs, this might be our favorite as the detail and action are just so good! Offered here individually for the first time ever and with the handwritten notes and signature of Conlon on the reverse.
