The Black Legion is a little known off-shoot of the KKK that dominated the midwest during the mid 1930's. They are best known for the myurder of Charles Poole in 1936, but in this image five members were being held in court for trial after the murder of a young black man named Silas Coleman. The paper caption notes the men killed Silas for the thrill of it after a weekend of drinking! An incredible vestige of the past, this is a rare photograph of justice trying to take hold during the height of Jim Crow! Issued by Wide World Photos and stamped on the back with a full paper caption.
