Harold Lloyd was more than just an actor and director, he was an iconic piece of Hollywood history and perhaps his recognition of his place in the genre is what led him to become the first preservationist historian of the early days of cinema. He accumulated the largest collection of early films, somehow feeling these were important pieces of history. Hs films along with countless others from the silent era went up in smoke after a massive fire took them all away. Early movies were filmed on nitrate film which would combust and were very dangerous but in Lloyd's time, this was not known and as such most were destroyed or decomposed and are lost. The image from the International News shows Lloyd dramatically holding a charred reel of a masterpiece now lost forever!
