John "Chief" Meyers is regrettably one of the most forgotten superstars of his era and this is one of the best images of him ever taken. From 1909-1914 he was the finest catcher in Major League baseball. One of the earliest minorities to play the game, he was subject to constant ridicule and derision from players, umpires and fans but he took it and demonstrated impeccable character both on and off the field. His 1911-1913 seasons still rank among the greatest ever by a Catcher, especially when considering the rough nature and poor equipment the position offered 100 years ago. Meyers batted .332, .358, and .312 in leading the Giants to a prolific championship run. The offered HUGE photograph is significant besides the subject, as it was taken by arguably the greatest baseball photographer of the era, Louis Van Oeyen. It has an embossed stamp from the master along with an impressive ink stamp on the back as well. Bold photograph shows Meyers in full catchers gear preparing to throw the ball. Photo has a crease and some wear as well as angled cut from editorial use. An important image of one of the most interesting players of his era and this example is one of the largest we have ever handled from Van Oeyen at twelve inches tall!
