The most unusual aspect of early basketball photography is that one piece of equipment was almost never present in the images… the hoop! Whether due to the height or the fact that most images were taken inside studios during the winter time, there are only a handful of images from before 1910 that actually picture the earliest form of basketball hoops. Here we see the first style after the peach basket was removed, a metal ring attached at the bottom of the rim with braces and the advent of the net was not standard yet. This is a pre 1910 photograph and most likely pre 1905 based on the dress of the players who also happen to be women so we are calling it c. 1903. One of the earliest images picturing players and the actual basketball hoop you will ever see!
