Before Opening Day 1947 when most people think Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, there were other games. The first of which, and when the color barrier was actually broken, took place on April 11, 1947 when the Dodgers played against the Yankees. Jackie started at first base for the first time on an actual major league roster! Here is a famous composite photograph from that day showing Jackie at bat and in the field. While it is impossible to tell exactly when this specimen was produced, it was likely done on the 25th anniversary of the event in 1972 with this example having the oldest stamp of 1976 on the back. It is likely that the original paper caption would have had an earlier date but it was long ago removed. This is an important piece of baseball history from the real first day the color barrier was broken in baseball.
