c. 1906 Silver gelatin photograph of the capacity bleacher crowd at Hilltop Park in New York, the home of the Highlanders (Yankees) and taken during what was surely a big game! A rare image from the Gilliam's Press Syndicate capturing one of the rarest and most desirable ballparks of the deadball era. Images of the ballpark itself are almost never seen and they usually exist only as backgrounds to game action. The image captures a sea of rabid fans all recognizing the presence of the camera and posing, some even holding up a newspaper and displaying it as the game is about to start. Scorecards and newspapers abound and the police officer posing with his foot perched on a box that would soon double as his chair is a fantastic touch. The clarity is off the charts and the image is stamped by Gilliam's on the reverse. This is the only example of this photograph known and is a unique look at the genesis of the Yankees franchise and while there is some chipping of the edges (mostly reserved to the top) this image could be matted to leave a perfect visual specimen.
