The Yankees were a powerhouse between the 1920's and 1960's seemingly winning the World Series every year, but WWII hit them hard. The 1944 squad had not one legitimate star with Stuffy Stirnweiss being their best player. As such they finished third and the public knew these guys were just holding spots for Dickey, DiMaggio and the real stars! Images from these war-time Yankees are actually pretty rare with this 1944 team photograph being the only example we have ever handled. A fine image in great shape issued by the Sporting News and offered here fresh out of a newspaper archive.
