Everyone knows the famous photo of the American flag being raised over Mt. Surabachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. It was taken by photographer Joe Rosenthal and is one of the most famous images ever taken. What is not well known is that Rosenthal took several dramatic images of the battle of Iwo Jima, many of which are equally as impressive, but are overshadowed by their more iconic older brother. The offered photo here is one of our favorite Rosenthal originals as it shows Marines pouring out of landing craft and heading toward the battle with smoke dominating the horizon. A crystal clear original that appears to be in perfect condition, this specimen has some periphery wear but it looks better than the technical grade. A museum quality original that we are proud to offer here for the first time ever fresh out of a newspaper archive.
