In 1929 Joe Dundee was stripped of his Welterweight Championship title and left a vacancy to be filled by either Jack Thompson or Jackie Fields. Here the two fighters pose together on the eve of the bout which would ultimately be won by Fields. Thompson however was one of the top black fighters of his era, just after Jack Johnson, and images of him are very tough to find! Issued by Wide World Photos and stamped on the back with a full paper caption as well, the image presents great with note to pinholes from publication and a very small corner tear at the bottom right.
