In 1931 as a response to the incredible offenses in baseball, the league listened to the gripes of pitchers and replaced the cork center of the ball with a new "cushioned cork" center. It helped. Here two of the biggest stars in the game, Carl Hubbell and Fred Fitzsimmons of the Giants are shown the new balls for the first time and asked their opinions on them. They seemed to like what they saw. Hubbell is also shown holding one of the boxes which is a rare collectible today. A cool image from the International News and with exceptional clarity. At first glance the photo looks almost perfect but there is a rip on the upper right corner that keeps the technical grade down.
