1908 Extremely early photograph of star catcher Duke Farrell from the Boston Red Sox in uniform and warming up at Hilltop park in New York (home of the Highlanders). Farrell was in his last season in baseball and a decade earlier he was the home run champ of the National League and one of the top catchers of the entire 19th century! Stamped on the back by Paul Thompson from about his first year taking baseball photographs as well, the image captures Farrell a few years after he retired as a player but was still with the Red Sox as a coach. In 1909 he left to join the Highlanders so we know the image pre-dates that season. A fantastic image that also captures a cool glimpse of the apartment buildings beyond the center field wall at Hilltop Park as well! One of the only original images of Farrell that exists!
