1939 Was essentially a farewell tour for Lou Gehrig. Despite retiring from baseball due to ALS (The Disease which would kill him a few years later) he remained a stalwart in the dugout offering his help and support to his teammates whenever possible. The offered image from the International News shows Gehrig putting on a brave face in full uniform with manager Joe McCarthy. Dated June of 1939 this is a bold and beautiful example of "The Final Season".
