Large 1907 double weight photograph of the Carlisle Indians football squad in full uniform. One of the most important teams in the history of the game, they also were socially important as they were up against racism and fought against players whose fathers perhaps had battled against their tribes and helped put them on reservations! A young man named Jim Thorpe, who was undersized but allowed to try out anyways, can be seen at left with the number 17 written beneath his image and legendary coach Pop Warner stands at the upper left (number 1). This is a famous photograph and is the one used by Wikipedia on their page about the significance of this team. Oversized for the era, only a handful of expensive images like this would have been produced at the time making this perhaps the only survivor in this form. The photo has some creases and it appears there has been some preservation done at some point to stabilize it, but the original gelatin surface remains. A powerful piece of photography that is one of the most important pieces of sports memorabilia we have ever offered! NOTE: This photo is subject to a very modest reserve that is about one third the estimated final value.
