1945 Official Marine Corps photograph of medics trying to save the lives of five wounded soldiers laying right on the sands at the base of Mt. Surabachi. A tremendous and touching image which shows the importance of these underrated parts of WWII as they do the most important work of anyone on the island. This was taken on Feb 20, 1945 after the first wave of invasion forces hit the sands. it would be another three days before Marines like these climbed Mt. Surabachi and planted the flag that would change the war. Stamped on the back with the purple military text that helps identify this as an original example, this is so clear you can see the fingernails of the wounded from across the room! One of the more dramatic images from WWII we have offered in some time.
