Largely forgotten today is the heated Presidential campaign of 1940 which makes the political climate of 2019 look tame! President Roosevelt and his new deal were hugely controversial and Wendell Wilkie aimed to dethrone the man who was breaking off with tradition and seeking a third term. So polarizing was the campaign that here the candidate looks angered into the crowd to try and pick out the man who had just hit him in the face with an egg! In a show of unity (unlike today) both sides denounced the act as uncivil. This is the only example of this rare and important image that we have ever seen and it grades nearly perfect.
