The importance of Steve Prefontaine can not be measured by his accomplishments on the track. He was an icon of the sport, and revolutionized running and style (including Nike) across the world. When he died in 1975 it was an international event, but the funeral took place at tiny Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon where he had attended just six years earlier. Images of this event can be found, but they are the same couple offered over and over again and all are wire photos. Enter this important piece of memorabilia which is an oversized, unique and freshly discovered image of his paul bearers carrying his body into the stadium for his memorial. A never before seen image from the funeral would have been unthought of before this gem was discovered in a local newspaper archive, stamped on the back by the photographer who took it, Jim Vincent of the Oregonian who had taken pictures of Prefontaine s a racer earlier in his career! Without a doubt, this is the most important photograph of Steve Prefontaine's death to have ever surfaced and we are proud to offer it here for the first time ever!
