The Philadelphia Athletics teams of the late 1920's and early 1930's were better than the Yankees of Ruth and Gehrig, but by 1941 they were depleted and looking to rebuild. It would take a while but they were shifting away from Foxx and Grove and leading a youth movement that might have worked if not for WWII looming around the corner. One vestige of the past remained however in Manager Connie Mack and he brought a single veteran with him to teach the youngsters in Al Simmons (front and center). Taken by photographer George Dorrill and with his name etched on the front, this is a beauty!
