One of the most famous moments in baseball history took place on July 4, 1939 at Yankee Stadium when Lou Gehrig officially stepped away from the game of baseball and proclaimed himself the "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth. Despite the magnitude of this moment, images from the event are few and the ones that exist are rare. It would have been unimaginable to us only months ago that newly discovered photographs of this day would surface from alternate angles, a fans perspective, that have never been seen before. Here however, are five images that defy logic and are offered here together for the first time ever. There are three images on the first page each of which are nicely described by the photographer. The first shows a procession of former Yankees marching to the flag pole for a ceremony, while the second shows members of the 1938 team hoisting their championship flag. The third titled, "posing for photographers" shows Babe Ruth and his famous white suit that he wore on this day. The next two images are the most significant on the next page as they are simply titled, "Lou Gehrig Receiving Gifts" but they show the microphones all set up for his famous speech, and the rows of teammates and players lined up that would make the backdrop for the famous images and news reel footage from the event. The image on the left shows Gehrig in his somber pose, holding his hat and bowing while he cries and the other shows him addressing his former teammates behind him. Of special note as well are the small group of photographers on the ground waiting to catch some good shots, and boy did they! One of these guys took the famous image of Gehrig breaking down only moments later! An absolutely breathtaking new discovery that is sure to be a major cornerstone of even the most advanced collections.
