Large 1916 photograph of the most beloved baseball player of the deadball era and hero to millions of schoolboys, Christy Mathewson. The ultimate figurehead of the New York Giants as a player, he broke ranks in 1916 for a chance to lead a club of his own and headed to Cincinnati. While the Reds were mediocre, he set the framework for a championship caliber club in 1919 despite the fact that he himself had gone off to WWI and was gassed in the process! The offered image is dated on the back from 1929 making is a slight re-strike but a specimen that is nearly 90 years old! Condition is quite nice and the quality is pretty good as well. This is one of his most famous images in Reds uniform and this example is the only one we have seen offered.
