1919 Was an important year for Babe Ruth. Everyone knew he could hit as he had just come off a league leading 11 homers in 1918. The problem was, he was such a good pitcher too! During the off-season he was informed that he would continue to take the mound but that he would be inserted into the lineup on his days off to take advantage of his bat. This image captures the young prodigy at a pivotal time in his career. The offered image of Ruth shows him in Red Sox team sweater during Spring Training as he clearly has turned his focus away from the mound as he hangs out by the batting cages (weapon in hand) and has a chat with a couple of guys. No ordinary guys mind you, but Billy Sunday (the ballplayer turned preacher) which provides for a bit of end enigma as Ruth indulged in everything Sunday disagreed with (sex and alcohol), and the young executive Ed Barrow who would ultimately play a huge role in Ruth's career with the Yankees. A fantastic silver gelatin original that represents a unique offering (the only one known to exist). The man behind the lens was teammate Amos Strunk and the photo was professionally removed from his personal scrapbook. A perfect 10/10 that represents not only an image of Ruth in Red Sox uniform, but a unique piece of art from the transitional period in his career.
