Benny Kauff was one of the biggest stars of the game in the years just before WWI, leading the Federal League in batting both seasons (1914-15) and being compared to Ty Cobb everywhere he went. His career and life would take a weird turn however as the Federal League folded and he re-joined the National League. He feuded with owners and was a difficult personality, plus his numbers slipped causing animosity among his teammates. After the 1920 season he was implicated in a car theft ring and banished from the game along with the Black Sox by Kennesaw Mountain Landis despite very little proof, and drifted into obscurity. With his career only lasting six seasons and overlapping WWI, images of Kauff are extremely rare with this being the finest we have ever seen. Issued by famed photographer George Grantham Bain and stamped on the back, this is a nearly perfect example outside the Giants dugout!
