1940's Silver gelatin photograph of infielder Frankie Austin from the Marianao club of Cuba in full uniform. One of the better players of his era, Austin was just born a little too early to have taken advantage of the new opportunities for black players in baseball after Jackie Robinson. One of the top hitting middle infielders in all of baseball, he put up HUGE numbers before taking his talents to white baseball and the PCL where he continued to play well, but racism and age never allowed him to reach his full potential. A native of Panama, he died in his home country a few years after his career ended in 1960. This is one of the only images of Austin from his time as a Negro Leaguer we have ever seen.
