A little known fact from the early days of the Negro Leagues is that the umpires were white! It was not until Rube Foster decided to go with a crew of skilled black umpires that the league broke down another barrier in baseball history. The first to do so and the man leading the charge was former player Billy Donaldson. Here we see the pioneer in his uniform on the field ready to take on the challenge of another game. A true pioneer who has never been given the credit he deserves, this is the ONLY image of Donaldson in his umpire uniform we have ever seen for sale and it is a special piece of baseball history being offered here for the first time ever!
