In 1916 the famed Norwich Academy moved toward integration when it admitted star athlete and standout student Harold Martin to its program. A star on the baseball and football field, he graduated with distinction but was denied a job at Westinghouse because of his race. He pitched in the Negro Leagues for a few years (including the 1921 Pittsburgh Keystones) and then drifted into private life. He had one last adventure though as one of the top men behind the famed Tuskegee Airmen and the instructor of their ground school, he died in 1945 during a training flight. We have never seen another image of Martin in the world, but this is a killer example showing the young athlete with his whole life in front of him wearing his uniform for the Norwich football team. A unique image from the estate of a teammate, this is a perfect 10/10 from an important American who also was a great Negro League baseball player!
