Important 1939 photograph of "The Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig as it was announced that he would never play baseball again. He is shown in uniform and on the Yankees bench as he seems to be in good spirits as he talks with manager Joe McCarthy, but he knew the reality; he was dying. An incredible piece of baseball history as it was taken the day Gehrig's diagnosis was made public and he said goodbye to the game he loved. Issued by the International News and stamped on the back with a paper caption as well, this is a nearly perfect specimen that is being offered here for the first time ever, fresh out of a newspaper archive where it sat for the last 78 years!
