If the position of catcher was easy, everyone would have a "Gabby Hartnett" on their team, but in all of sports, the position of baseball backstop is quite possibly the most difficult and physically demanding there is. This makes the accomplishments of the real Gabby Hartnett even more impressive. 20 Years behind the plate and all the while putting up an average at just a hair under .300 is an amazing feat, especially considering the way the game was played nearly 100 years ago. Images of Hartnett are also some of the toughest to find of prewar Hall of Famers with this being a fine example from early in his career, dated 1925 on the back.
