During the epic 1927 season Babe Ruth would notch his bat for every home run he hit. These bats survive today, but until now we have never seen a photo showing Ruth holding one of these bats. Taken at the height of his 60 homer season, Ruth takes a moment here to pose for a photograph at the ballpark in full uniform and with the bat turned label up so that the distinct (and fresh) notches can be easily seen. Clean and bold, the image is so precise that the individual grains of wood can also be seen which is a dream to those wishing to photo-match certain pieces of lumber. Looking like he hadn't slept in a while, Ruth is also flashes some of the determination that would land him in the record books along with his trusty war club. While this is a c. 1950 re-strike with considerable age, this photograph is still the only example we have ever seen in a vintage form. Photo has a few pinholes at the corners for display and a small spot of paper loss on the top border, but it looks stunning and is one of the most important images of Ruth we have ever offered.
