Robert McNeill was one of the pioneer photographers in American History. He was one of the first black men to operate his own photo service as a photographer, and after serving in WWII he took many of the important images of black history in our country, especially in the Washington DC area. The offered photo is special both for the incredible subject (Homestead Grays Negro League baseball team) and the fact that it is stamped on the back by McNeill from early in his career. Taken in 1945 when the Grays were the top team in Negro League Baseball, the team boasted a lineup that included Josh Gibson (fifth from right), and Buck Leonard (next to Gibson) among others. This is the only example of this photograph we have ever seen in any form and it represents what we feel is a unique new discovery that is being offered here publicly for the first time ever. Condition and quality are both outstanding with the photo remaining here in fantastic condition overall with minimal handling wear being the only flaw. Stamped on the back by the McNeill photo service of Washington DC, with their completely original 1940's example, this is one of the top pieces of Negro League photography we have ever seen!
