When this photo was taken in 1938, Lou Gehrig was dying, he just didn't know it yet. By the middle of the season he had lost a step and people were thinking age was finally catching up to the Iron horse. He plugged on and persevered despite adversity which is possibly the greatest testament to his work ethic and determination. He had to know something was wrong though, and perhaps this photo captures those thoughts as Gehrig stands by the batting cages for an away game and appears pensive while holding his bat. One of the greatest and most famous images of Gehrig ever taken, this is the only original "vintage 1" we have ever seen. A double weight silver gelatin beauty in fantastic condition, the photo was autographed late in life (when Gehrig could no longer sign for himself) to a former teammate Pat Collins and while the photo is the star here, the signature adds a nice touch. We feel this is one of the most important and poignant Gehrig images out there and a restorer could remove the ink signature to leave only the masterpiece of photography behind, but we love it just how it is. An investment quality image of Gehrig with layers upon layers of history beneath its beautiful appearance!
