In one of the most important bouts in boxing history, Stanley Ketchel the pound for pound best fighter of his era, agreed to fight Jack Johnson the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Despite being outweighed by nearly fifty pounds, Ketchel was confident and actually knocked Johnson down before he suffered a hard right that ended the bout. The offered silver gelatin photograph is from the iconic square off between the two just a matter of seconds before the bout took place. Both men are surrounded by trainers and handlers from all over the ring with the photographer catching the fighters seconds from infamy. While this photo is a re-strike, it appears to be from the 1930's or even a bit earlier based on the paper composition and feel. A rare relic from one of the most important events in boxing history and in a rare large size!
